I was wondering what people use to finish their candle or tealight holders? Are there finishes that shouldn't be used because of the heat involved?

I am working on one at the moment (that I will post up if it works out), but I am not sure how I will finish it.

Thanks

Alan

So long as you don't soak them in petrol you should be fine. :funny:

Seriously though, I have used various finishes both with and without glass inserts and as far as I know, no one has managed to set one on fire yet. (Goes to check product liability insurance.)

As above really. The other thing I've done, is sand as usual and then burnish with the shavings. Looking forward to seeing the finished piece

I use friction polish but the ones I sell I always fit a glass liner inside and make sure I tell the customer the usual safety issues relating to burning candles

In the Sarf of England we have these marvellous switches on the walls.
Flickit and the whole room lights up in an instant, saves all that faffing about with candles and tealights.
I think It's called electrickery google will show you how it works if your interested.

It will never catch on up north. Although it is getting harder to find gas mantles these days.

I use whatever finish I fancy on candle sticks for those that I intend selling I always use a brass insert for long candles and a glass insert for tea lights and as Vic said tell people of the dangers no matter how stupid it sounds one thing I always tell them is they should never be left unattended there are some stupid people out there most fires are started by candles left unattended if you intend making a lot then print of a care sheet to go with them just to cover yourself and as Walter said look up what the law says about them and table lamps you will be surprised

This one will probably be kept by me, not sure if I am sensible enough to have lit candles around, but oh well!

I was thinking friction polish myself, with maybe a wax over it (hopefully not candle wax!). I picked up some glass inserts from Tesco a few days ago, they have one big enough to take a 3" candle which is nice.

When you are putting an insert in, do you leave the top of it slightly proud of the wood, or keep it level? I guess it would defeat the purpose to have it recessed below the wood!

Thanks

Give us a clue mate, who is Toni Marie Peters and what has she got to do with finishes for candlesticks?

Sorry mate I shouldn't have put that up, a momentary lapse.
She is a friend who's sister had a fire in her flat last night, started I am told by a tealight candle thingy.
Nobody hurt but extensive damage to said property.

Thanks for the explanation Brian. It can happen. I once knew someone who lit some candles then went to have a bath. Living room caught fire and she was lucky to get out unharmed.

Almost always down to carelessness or leaving candles unattended though. I don't know of any incident caused by the tea light holder itself catching fire.

Glad to hear your friend's sister is OK.

Recent arrival of two utterly committed ratbag kittens they would bump over anything I am totally wary of candles never underestimate what kids will do with them or leave them. Our Church has a total ban on all candles and they are self insured. I have never forgotten we relaxed one time our Samoan Families put on a show with traditional dances etc they performed a candle dance quite spectacular really lights out loud music etc. That night one family went to bed jnr lit a canle crawled into a loose rolled carpet during alterations played there for a bit left it half the house burned down. Ok we have a smoke alarm you say it never works if its in the kitchen when the fire takes hold in an end room until too late.

Love candles spent my whole life loving them but have a deep respect for them these days. A great advocate of Health and Safety laws now sellers beware as Woody says, users beware they can bite you when you relax.

Peter.

It's always safer to use an insert, just in case.

I think I'm right in saying you're supposed to put something in writing about not leaving lit candles unattended, with every candlestick you sell. I may be wrong, but believing it to be true, that's what I've always done. I just print them on a sheet of address labels, and stick one underneath every candlestick.

As far as finish is concerned, a wax finish is worth considering, because if hot candle wax gets on it, it's easy to clean off without leaving a mark. Just a thought.
