This is my first ever attempt it's a bit of purpleheart wood I picked up a mandrel etc at the show yesterday from turners retreat and I have to say Dave was really helpful and I would certainly deal with them again. I cocked the 2nd one up the tube was spinning inside the blank when I put it on the lathe guess I didn't put enough glue on the blank but was worried about getting glue inside the tube.

Cheers

Matt

Great first try Matt:thumbs:
Rough up the tube with coarse sand paper.
I use 5 minute epoxy. Glue gets in the tube mostly on the end
but I clean most of it out before the glue hardens
and later on a heavy toothed round rasp pretty quickly.
Some guys plug up the ends and remove the plug material after.

I am using a polyurethane titebond glue. I used a old drill bit just a fraction smaller diameter than the tube and pushed it through as the glue was going off to get rid of any excess in the tube. I will make sure the next one I do I rough the tube up so the glue makes a better contact thanks for the advice .

Looks good to me. I use plasticine to stop the glue going into the tube, just makes cleaning up that little bit easier. Just press the end of the tube into a thin sheet of plasticine and lead this end into the drilled hole after applying the glue to the tube.

A great first attempt Matt, this looks identical to my first pen, which is still knocking around somewhere in the house ..

Matt, it's easier to get any glue out of the tube once it's dry and hard, a smaller size drill bit will work (in your hand of course) or a round file just to rub the glue out.

You could use a potato to plug the end of the tubes.

I've tried potato, dental base wax, and PlayDoh for plugging tubes before I epoxy them, but have found that non-hardening modeling clay from an art supply store works best for me. While it does keep epoxy out of the inside of the tubes, it can still build up around the outside and needs to be cleaned off. I use drill bits for this, and a small scraper if necessary (which is actually the awl from a pocket knife). I made up a chart of cleaning drills of the closest diameter for the inside of the various tubes I use. As you can see, some are closer than others.

I don't know why the photos uploaded out of order. It's happened to me here before.

I use ca and don't roughen the the tubes, rarely get any inside but when I do it easily reams out when dry and can't remember a failure.
If you wanna use plugs get some of these I have seen them in Poundland.
Squeeze em in, push em out and reuse em, last for yonks init?
