Finally got the shed finished and turned my first Sierra pen. On my new lathe and new tools, didn't come out the way I expected for the following reasons.
Not sure off speed as I don't know if the belt should be near the back pulley...
Not sure if my new tools need sharpened or not as there seems to be a few deep scratches...
Anyway will see if someone locally can advised

Sierra pen in chrome and wood is Wild Mango.
All comments good or bad appreciated

Tom

Thanks very much Mark, but I think I might have to get chisels sharpened. Also to find out which pulley, if that's the right word, is the fastest??

Well done its all a learning curve.
Thanks very much Alphi 1 . Think I have found the problem but still will get my chisels sharpened anyway. I am using an Axminster 240wl lathe and my belt is on the second pulley in from the outside, told that the furthest would out is the slowest speed. So the lathe speed would have been 1000rpm, so will move up till 2000rpm...

After getting shed, lathe, chisels, getting electric in, wood for my bench and shelving etc. Unfortunately the coffers are empty so sharpening will be at the mens shed other basic things will have to come first.....

Have a look at negative rake cutter. If you buy the cutter and make a tool to hold it, it would not cost a lot. Use your lathe to make a handle and a piece steel bar to hold the cutter.
