Hi all

Here are some pictures of the my 1st try at pen turning and they are in the order of making.

1 & 2 Sliver birch with Ca finish, 3 Unknown wood again CA finish 4 wood as 3 but friction polish with a touch of Micro wax, 5-6 Some red wood from Scottish wood show and finished with EEE.

Silver birch i think rather bland others ?
Let me know what you think.

regards Ernie

What do I think? I think you've done a bloody good job on these!!! As you appear to have cracked the Slimline type you may wanna try the Euro style next? A bit fatter, plus a need to turn a tenon but nowt too difficult. Well done again, Ernie:banana::banana::banana::banana:

Hi all

Forgot to say on the post that i have several blank rounds rounds of which i got from the local job club when closing and would like to maybe swap some for some good pen blanks, wood or other type or any other items? suggestions pm please.

Blanks are between smallest 290 to 315 round and 50 to 95 thick. Zebrano, Bubinga and Olive ripple ash.

There's nowt much wrong with them !

I'd suggest keeping a cpl of your first ones, I'm glad I did as I can look back to see a progression (regression) :funny:

Good stuff lets see some more.

Well done fella I'm new to pen turning too ( well turning in total ) its a great feeling that first pen run.

I tried euros next from axeminister and loved the fatter feel

The chaps here gave me some really constructive advice when I requested it on them and it really helped.

Mind you I got too clever and forgot the tenon on my next euro, and I will need to convert to slimline!

Alos Someone else suggested I try the skewel chisel practice so i made a great Christmas tree shape, then made a rubbish tenon and flung it too the rafters.....as it snapped off. Does this make me a plonker or just dangerous?

Good luck and keep turning

Excellent start to the hobby Ernie. Careful now cos you're at the top of a slippery slope and there's no stopping. You'll soon be as obsessed as the rest of us.

Ernie,

They are excellent, I wish mine first ones were that good...:rolling:

You have certainly managed to get them finished well and turned just right. The picture is also ok and better than some of my early shots..

Well done.. Keep it up....

Hi Paul and everyone else

Thanks for the comments which i like a lot. (will just keep quiet about the 1st couple i did and made a B.... of.

I think when everything seems right and fairly easy, is when it goes down hill and you feel a plonker. I think i will look for some Euro pen kits now as you have said then we can both be plonkers.

Lovely pens Ernie,

I particularly like the red wood ones as it looks like you've got a little more shape in them rather than straight up & down between the bushes. Excellent first efforts :claps:

Ernie, it is hard to believe these are some of your first turned pens ... They are very nicely shaped and finished, unlike my first ones which actually looked like stick insects ... :winking:

Mind you I got too clever and forgot the tenon on my next euro, and I will need to convert to slimline!

Paul, just add your own center band to it ...
