I did my first segmented bowl the other day and yes when it's in the lathe, on sloooww, it looked horrendous thrashing about. And that was with the corners nipped off.
As terry says it does come off surprisingly well. In my vast knowledge, ok non existent, take small very cuts till you get it round. You will love it when it's done.
