A fluted ash vessel that I have made recently, the top 2/3rds are cut using a router on the lathe the bottom 1/3rd is done by hand using rasps and lots of sanding.

6" wide by 9" tall finished with woodoc 5

thank you for your comments

I don't really do calculations GeordieB, i had made a smaller piece with 24 flutes using a 12mm round nose cutter so I knew this larger diameter would need a larger cutter or have larger flat areas between the cuts. At first I tried a 15mm cutter but it was not quite what i wanted so i used a 19mm cutter and that worked better.

Lovely work George, I hate to think how long that would take if ever I got to that stage in turning! :thinks:

A spectacular piece George. Not too much decoration as to take away from the beautiful grain

Have you ever thought about making a false base for the router so that you plunge the router bit through it just a fraction deeper than needed and the back off to the correct depth, This will leave a smaller gap around the cutter and reducing the chance of the flat raised pieces tapering as you pointed out in the video.
I have thought of something similar but with the set up that you described what Richard has as I have two of the small routers with the collar.
