Hi all

Following my intro I've attached photos of two pens I recently turned from wood given to me by a guitar making friend of mine. One is snakewood (which I'm told might split in time - here's hoping not!!) and the other from an offcut of a guitar neck (purple heart and maple).
Any suggestions for improvement is most welcome.

Cheers

They look good to me Chris, Euro pen kits aren't a favourite around here but I like them

Well Cris thats great my advice is keep going the way you are I have a couple of kits like this amongst 100 others of all shapes and sizes the part of these pens I will experiment with is the top using another material but thats just me.

You have gone into two worlds with these pens bet you got a shock when you drilled and worked the Snake Wood I know I did I feared for the wood and the drill its like a rock you have done so well and like you trust it holds up for ever, the second pen is random shapes and angles like patchwork quilts it has its own appeal a good reward for hard work I do like it. Thanks for showing mate.

Peter.

A couple of very nice pens Chris. Hopefully the snakewood wont split on you.
As already said Euro's are not everyone's cup of tea, but I think they are OK. But Dans kits are far better

It would be a shame if the Snakewood did split, as it looks a very nice pen indeed .. Segmenting is right up my street Chris .. Both well turned and finished ..

Very nice pens, Chris, and the use of the pine cone to display the segmented pen is very effective. I also like snakewood very much and (touch wood!) I haven't had one split on me yet! I think the key is patience. Don't get the work too hot when drilling or turning it; apply CA glue inside and out after drilling and leave it to stabilise for at least a couple of weeks before turning the blanks.

Hi everyone
Firstly to say thank you for all the positive comments regarding the pens.
In answer to Stewart's question regarding the finishes, the snakewood was finished with friction polish, the segmented pen was a CA finish which worked for me that day. I do find my CA finishes are hit and miss, probably my technique but I will persevere!
