My new Sphere turning jig. The design is largely due to materials I happened to have to hand. It can turn Spheres up to about 8” diameter.

I very rarely draw plans although I do draw out some components to double check dimensions sometimes. Most of it is self explanatory but I can take a better picture of some of the parts if it helps Bob. It was made specifically to fit my Axminster AT1416VS so adjustments will need to be made to fit whatever wood turning lathe you have.

The upper part does rotate on the main shaft and is held in place with a locking lever. It’s not intended for cutting coves though.

The jig works through a large angle so you can easily cut spheres without turning the wood between centres. This means you only have one “nub” to remove. In case you were wondering ... after trimming with a sharp knife you mount the piece between “cups” shown here to remove the nub completely and do finish sanding.

I tried out the 9mm cutter today. I got a couple of catches with it and then I went a bit too far and the ball fell off! Ok though after some sanding. Picture a few minutes before it fell off! I think I’ll stick with the 6mm. And yes, I did have a quick hoover before taking the picture ...
