Being in business makes you feel like conquering the world in the field you must love in the first place. Reality in the form of over here for us was the sales tax,a huge volume with untold addendums and interpretations. This nightmare we conquered for five yrs in the 70,s. We closed for lunch every work day, public holidays and annual holiday time.I filmed in 16mm Bridge openings ,special occasions for a very low fee including the full need for a narrative to accompany the film. Advantages were the new colour TV ostensibly to view the 16mm film that was returned after use on the 5 TV stations from Sydney to Wollongong and commercial channels.Life was full with six children, involvement in 26 organisations in an executive position. I joined Masonry and visited lodges affiliated continually. Our children grew up and hived off to Sydney, Canberra Melbourne, Hawaii, Alderman on The city Council (no remuneration),Councillor on The overriding Electricity Authority and keeping our marriage afloat in the best way possible.
It was a sense of relief when I was offered a job back in Canberra as a Photographer and Tech Officer with the Research oriented C.S.I.R.O. commonwealth scientific organisation. Sell up property and close ties with the City over one year when I lived in Canberra returning to Goulburn every Friday night till Sunday night and came back to Goulburn to photograph a couple or more weddings with my wife doing the same work load of weddings.
The move back to Canberra ,buy a house reestablish with three children still at school. Lots of fun. Yes you learn to ration time the best way you can. Burocracy did their best to delay and plot as to how to crucify small business with hardest penalties. Like tap dancing you learn fast or fall over.
When I hear of the tumult in Ireland called the troubles, Nthn Ireland governed by the Brits ( Witnessed this first hand), Scotland trying all the time to succeed from the Brits. Welsh Separatism and so many other things, The Euro Market membership, Brexit just as much uncertainty in the UK. I am so glad I spent time in 1985 when it was very reasonable bed and breakfast, train travel easy and for me cheap, ferry fares the same, many other countries expanded my vision as one does when you are given three months to live with Cancer).
Today I made contact with a pen collector and business owner cutting and selling my favourite Gem Opals. He wants some of my exotic Tasmanian timber, we will get together soon. Another mate who makes 10,000 dollar boxes realised he has enough timber for 30 yrs is pulling out Burl to bend your mind etc and is retiring from a few years with the Aussie Parliament house that employs 1500 people with orders for two yrs of document boxes etc, he is saving me heaps of offcuts..
So on with the motly it is, into hospital in a week for another operation then maybe stability for a while. Please take care over your way and enjoy your pens etc.
Kind regards Peter.
