High all
just a quick one which is the best generator to run a full workshop? ie table saw and welder table drill and scrollsaw not all at the same time {unplug one to plug another one in} confused lol

Check the equipment to see what power is required and also remember that the start up current is much more than the run current as well as the load current.

Don't they have electricity in Huddersfield then?

As Derek said check the plates on each tool for the power requirements and the average generator at a reasonable price is about 2-3000w such as this SDMO HX3000 3000W Generator 115 / 230V | Generators | Screwfix.com but from my own experience that is their maximum rating (to sell them) and not always their continuous output and some will fluctuate at the maximum output range. They are also noisy and smelly ie keep away from house etc since they also generate carbon monoxide in the exhaust. Had to use mine for 15 hours a couple of months ago it ran 2 freezers 2 fridges and house lighting its a 2800w rated petrol one.

Only in an emergency normally would you need to run all of them at the one time. Pick the appliance with the highest rating, allow a good safety rating. Choose one with stability, quiet select the best you can afford. Our cost 5000.00 about 25 yrs ago, there was a tax loophole in our country if bought for special purpose ie emergency power supply I got it down to 3000.00.

Runs like a dream has battery start a real plus. Our second source of water is an underground bore the highest user 2.5 hp 240 volt motor. We keep petrol as standby and cycle that with the cars if not needed.

I suggest one item at a time if you are a one man or woman user. Pierre gave an insight into a U Beaut charger Optimate I bought one and leave it on the generator).

thanks for the comments its just that we have had to move because of the disability l have, and can only get a garage with-out electricity at the moment so l was just wondering about a generator but no nothing about them but thanks for the advice

I know people who safely run a lead out to the garage if it is near. For example my Chinese friends are in China right now and I run a lead to the house, charge their three vehicles in their absence. Is the new set up remote?

Can you run an extension cord out to the garage?
Be cheaper and you wont upset the neighbours with the noise.

Blimey Peter, that's one heck of an extension lead. We get trains direct from China to London these days, but an extension lead from China to Huddersfield is a whole different kettle of fish - even if your friends were willing.

I've found Kipor Diesel Generators | Silent Diesel Generator | Kipor Generator Parts- UKmake a good range and it's more about the amount of amps you can draw from it than the wattage. Kipor's are mostly diesel powered but at least you're not storing more flammable petrol in your garage. They're not cheap, the one I was looking at was around the £ 1500 mark and had a 20amp supply which should be more than enough to run one machine at a time.

I'll just correct myself on this, it's actually watts not amps that is more important and I found this one that might do for me too, and it's only £595 incl vat and delivery and it handles 2600 watts. Kipor IG2600P Digital Generator

Thanks for that it would be ok if it was a house but it is a flat that is within walking distance from the flat but across a busy road

I'm lucky I have a lot of space but if you are trying to run a generator to power your kit I would suggest a minimum 3000w generator because as advertised it will normally give you 2800w taking into account peak loads, but you will have to run it outside of the garage under a 'lean to ' roof and ensuring that its exhaust fumes are not directed at anyone else's air intake ie openable windows, vents for gas central heating and cooking etc. Then you will have to take into account the noise it makes, the average priced generator is rated at about 90-98 decibels, but that is the maximum allowed anyway in a town environment which means it can be pretty intrusive. Now there are less noisy ones but the quieter the greater the price.... Here is an article worth reading and it has a few links. What's the Quietest Generator you Can Buy?

Its worth researching because there are also gas powered generators and diesel powered generators (but keep in mind that whatever powers your generator you will have to store its fuel and all generator fuels are highly flammable in their gaseous state). Equally there are standard generators and inverter generators, the latter gets louder as the wattage demand goes up ie it has to give more throttle to give more watts, the former doesn't really change speed. But in modern generators, the more power output the greater the noise also the noise generated is subjective, sometimes its considered loud sometimes just annoying at the same decibel rating.

The other thing to consider is that these things aren't light and if you have to run them outside well ventilated then you have to put them away at night (sadly the population cannot be guaranteed to be honest) and unless they have a decent wheel kits ie big pneumatic tyres and handle to pull they normally weigh about 30 - 40 kilos!!

Sorry to look at the negative aspects but I forgot to get one with wheels (or rather I found a good price and forgot the wheels in my enthusiasm for a bargain) so I had to buy a sack truck to move it!!

No need for giant wheels from outside to inside parking mine has small wheels that are wonderful for mobility. It would seem daylight use would be most acceptable for immediate neighbors except where shift workers or nursing mums make up the ones next door. I will take a pic in the next couple of days. My generator is part of our emergency kit in the event of. Along with the bore for water etc the generator runs the deep well bore..Welding is yet another ball game but with inverter technology easier to solve.

Security is an issue, they are very attractive to thieves so if you do get one make sure you put a lock and chain on it
