I have now got my recently acquired wood lathe in the shed and set up ready to go. (My first wood lathe)
I have scoured the internet and woodturning forums and purchased lots and lots of goodies for the lathe.
The only thing I have not purchased is wood gouges because I really have no idea what I need.
So I am looking for advice I don't want to spend a fortune on stuff then find out its no good for the duty I intend to use it on.
I'm looking at turning a small bowl initially so what would you suggest.
If possible I would like to use carbide tooling because I have no idea how to sharpen a gouge.

This would be my list of tools to get first.
1 bowl gouge 3/8"
2 spindle roughing gouge 3/4"
3 Parting tool
4 spindle gouge 1/4"
5 Scraper

For bowls a 3/8" bowl gouge it can also be used for other applications. If money will allow then the Robert Sorby turning set has a good mix of chisels that would be needed, then buy as you need from there.

Don,t forget a grinder with a stable rest and preferably with a white wheel.

I am not a lover of carbide tools. You can get a much better finish with HSS tools meaning less sanding. Find a club and get some hands-on including advice on sharpening. I freehand the grinds on my tools

What Derek said about joining a club.Great advice & it’s what all new starters should do, or go for lessons with a professional turner.

Cleveland woodturner is a ten-minute drive from my house. They have a web site. I will look them up after the Holidays and let you know how I get on.
