I stupidly mentioned at a Viking show recently that I had some bone lying around in the shed.
So one of "Her Indoors" friends asked me if I could make her a couple of bone sewing needles.
Never made any before, but here's my first efforts

Very nice work. Was it easy to work the bone?
I cheated Ray. I used the band saw to get the basic shape. They refined it and rounded the corners on a sanding disc I can attach to the headstock of my lathe
And I only tried to sand my finger once :funny:

Very nice, did you boil the bone or was it raw?

No Peter, it is raw...ish. I have tried boiling etc before when I tried to make some authentic leather punches. It makes the bone brittle and too easy to break.
So I just gave the bone to our dog and then made sure it was properly clean with a light boiling.

Derek, I just gave the bone to our dog, who is pretty good at cleaning the remains off it. Then a dquick boil to get rid of any remaining marrow etc.
Oh yes is stinks just like Antler.

A great pair of needles there, hopefully you'll show us some stuff made with them?
