I am looking to see if here are any recommendations regarding a stylus pen. SWMBO wants one, but I am not enamoured of the slimline/streamline lot. I know TR and Axi both do a Sierra-style one - how secure is the stylus rubber? And how reliable is the twist mech? Do Dan or Phil do any?

In the U.S. You can get a 'steel weave' stylus ball - is it available over here? Any thoughts appreciated.

I've got some that fit a 7mm tube and might have some for a Sierra as well. I've also got some of the metal weave and some coloured ones. PM me your address David. I've made some stylus's with just the 7mm tube and not bothered with a pen for the CMM.

I can get the steel covered ones for you, but you don't need them. The non-covered ones are capacitative, the covered ones are specially designed to ruin your screen.

I've bought the slimlines before from the US and they are fine, and I actually prefer them to the Sierra stylus, which I personally think are pretty ugly - but which ever kits you buy, the rubber is always going to be the weakest link. Most people are fine with them I find, but the odd one or two seem to think they have to push it through the screen to make it work, and therefore damage the rubber quite quickly.

Since you asked - I've got spare rubbers in different sizes on the website, and Taiwanese upgrade slimline mechs, which are quite a bit nicer than the Chinese ones. I imagine all the far eastern kits use the same rubbers which they probably buy in. They certainly all seem to be the same to me, so its really just a question of which kit you prefer I think.

Thanks guys!. Paul, PM is on it's way. Phil, thanks but I'm not too sure why you say the mesh ones are designed to ruin your screen? Hyperbole, I'm sure, but what is it based on? Not having any experience either way I'm leaning toward the mesh one so if there's something I should know please fill in the blanks.

I absolutely can't stand slimlines/streamlines regardless of the mech, but if you have decent Sierra mechs (and Cigar ones too) I'd definitely place an order.

I know rubber ones wear but that's not my problem - my problem is a three-year-old boy who likes the feel of the rubber between his teeth ... I kid you not! He has ruined four or five styli in in very few months, including a kid-size one we bought for him to play games on the iPad with. He's not teething, so I'm fresh out of ideas as to why he does it!

I've not used the mesh version, but i have seen them, and I can't imagine that it is much different to abrading a glass surface with something akin to a scouring pad. I've never been sure if they are meant to re-inforce, or if they are a legacy from pre-capacitative days. Either way, at a few pence for a replacement rubber versus a few hundred quid for a new tablet or phone, I don't feel inclined to go there. If someone who has a mesh covered stylus in constant use can tell me I'm wrong, I'm more than willing to fall on my sword.

Your little boy's penchant for nibbling sounds a bit Freudian to me.
