I've ordered a mandrel and 5 slimline kits (forgot to get a barrel trimmer) so being anxious to have a go and having a hour to spare this afternoon I thought I'd cut up a few practice blanks, mostly from the scrap box.

Here's the result - 140 blanks - only ordered 5 kits remember:duh:

The rosewood should be very nice though so might leave it to last!:thinks:

Good question.

Much of it is oak, some fairly plain american white and others european with more figure. These came from flooring jobs (wish I'd kept some of the others). Rosewood on the left, not sure which and have had a batch of this for 30 years, "rescued" from a factory going bust, which made cutlery blanks etc. the rest are various mahogany types.

I have a good selection of timbers going back a very long way so it's going to be fun sorting it out.

I've actually done my first bit of turning in 15 years tonight. A candle holder for my brother so it's a guinea pig test bit. Might post it to be shot down in flames :thinks:

A fair pile there sire, but with a fair hand and a good wind behind ye, they'll be gone in a flash.

Wow, Lotsa blanks there mate, have fun.

Kind regards Peter.

Actually I'm kicking myself. Was in the USA last year and Canada this as well as OZ and NZ a couple of times recently and have never brought back any wood. Had plenty of opportunities but I won't make that mistake next time.

Firstly, what a nice clean workshop you have there............... If I had enough wood to cut 140 blanks from "scrap wood" then I would be real pleased...

:winking:Ever seen a duck? Calm on the surface, paddling like hell below - don't believe all you see. In truth I try to keep it clean (ish) but I have so much stuff it's not easy. I also empty my van into the workshop every night just in case some thieving persons decide to relieve me of my tools.

I posted some pics on another forum but I'll put a couple on here if anyone's interested.

As far as the wood is concerned, I keep almost everything and some of the hardwoods go back longer than I can remember so I haven't scratched the surface so plenty of fun to look forward to.
