I was shown this pen some while ago by Neil who has been selling them or a similar kit to this.
I knew not of a name for the kit as he kept it close to his chest, I knew Dan was working on a new product and was keen to see it.
Dan gave me a sample at the unveiling under much pressure from me to do so on the proviso that I give it a review.
I am well known for complaining about the quality of the rubbish kits we have to put up with irrespective of cost and also for being outspoken and telling it like it is whether that pleases or offends.
Having already seen Walters review of the same kit I was rehearsing my answers to queries that came up in his thread but now I am sitting here I think it would be unfair to mention any more about that and just get on with my honest appraisal of The Omega pen kit from Taylor Tools Mirfield init?
Packet open kit laid out looks very smart but on scrutiny I have concerns about what looks like a vicious step at the nib to barrel flange, I remember commenting on this before to Neil.
It looks like it could be ugly.
Next thing I notice is a loose piece of plastic which is the cap thread tube, this also raises a concern for me but it is nothing I didn't already know about.
I have no bushes for this kit so will have to turn between centers, no problem for a man of my calibre init?
I only have metric drills so a measure to the nearest size comes up with 10mm and 11.5mm on my Dewalt set and all fits nice a snug seated in with ca glue.
I have since discovered they actually imperial sizes but these work for nit?
A bit of London Plane from Eamonn (Sliver) given to me years ago, cheers Eamonn, a goodly spin and a shave push it all together brings it to this.
As for the aesthetics of it, I'll let you judge for yourself. I am still getting used to looking at it from all angles and still cannot say I love it.
The feel is something else, I find it a very well balanced comfortable fine writing instrument.
Quality shines above the crap of the Jnr Gent we are used to with nice smooth deep looking platings, the plastic thread in the cap is smoother and stronger than the norm.
While typing this up I have been sitting doodling with it and find \I prefer it posted while in my hand.
To sum up I think it is a pen with a style of it's own (not unstylish) which feels better than it looks, time and use will tell the quality of the platings and how the plastic thread stands up to wear and tear.
Will I buy the JNr Gent or the Baron again? I haven't for a few years so don't think I will start now.
Will I buy this kit? Yes at the right price.
The cap final did press down fine Dan.
OK ready for the onslaught init?
