I was shown this pen some while ago by Neil who has been selling them or a similar kit to this.
I knew not of a name for the kit as he kept it close to his chest, I knew Dan was working on a new product and was keen to see it.
Dan gave me a sample at the unveiling under much pressure from me to do so on the proviso that I give it a review.
I am well known for complaining about the quality of the rubbish kits we have to put up with irrespective of cost and also for being outspoken and telling it like it is whether that pleases or offends.

Having already seen Walters review of the same kit I was rehearsing my answers to queries that came up in his thread but now I am sitting here I think it would be unfair to mention any more about that and just get on with my honest appraisal of The Omega pen kit from Taylor Tools Mirfield init?

Packet open kit laid out looks very smart but on scrutiny I have concerns about what looks like a vicious step at the nib to barrel flange, I remember commenting on this before to Neil.
It looks like it could be ugly.
Next thing I notice is a loose piece of plastic which is the cap thread tube, this also raises a concern for me but it is nothing I didn't already know about.

I have no bushes for this kit so will have to turn between centers, no problem for a man of my calibre init?
I only have metric drills so a measure to the nearest size comes up with 10mm and 11.5mm on my Dewalt set and all fits nice a snug seated in with ca glue.
I have since discovered they actually imperial sizes but these work for nit?

A bit of London Plane from Eamonn (Sliver) given to me years ago, cheers Eamonn, a goodly spin and a shave push it all together brings it to this.

As for the aesthetics of it, I'll let you judge for yourself. I am still getting used to looking at it from all angles and still cannot say I love it.
The feel is something else, I find it a very well balanced comfortable fine writing instrument.

Quality shines above the crap of the Jnr Gent we are used to with nice smooth deep looking platings, the plastic thread in the cap is smoother and stronger than the norm.
While typing this up I have been sitting doodling with it and find \I prefer it posted while in my hand.

To sum up I think it is a pen with a style of it's own (not unstylish) which feels better than it looks, time and use will tell the quality of the platings and how the plastic thread stands up to wear and tear.
Will I buy the JNr Gent or the Baron again? I haven't for a few years so don't think I will start now.
Will I buy this kit? Yes at the right price.
The cap final did press down fine Dan.

OK ready for the onslaught init?

I think that is a very constructive review, useful well photographed to see the detail and I respect your appraisal enough to think yes, I will try this kit when Dan has them available. Thanks for that Brian, much appreciated.

Thank you Grump. After reading many of you reviews in the path I feel a sense of relief now. Thank you for doing the review.

Thank you Dan for listening to my past grumbles and working to correct them with this kit.
I am happy to have done this for you, if you want more pics or any particular angle I would be happy to do those for you.
I notice some crud on my background.
Right something has to give here, I keep trying to vape it instead of my e-cig.
That's how comfortable it feels init?

sorry but i also have an issue with the taper
really sorry to say this Dan
i would prefer maybe some shape put to it ...i know most people prefer a straight pen on here
maybe bulge out the end to reduce the taper
i don't think it is an issue with the kit
and maybe just the way they are turned
i guess i am going to get burnt and kicked off the forum
the 2 reviewers as far as i can see are quality turners..and i hope i have not disrespected them
but a bit of shape and reduction of taper would sell it for me

shall i leave now in disgrace?
not saying i could do better ..i would not get close to quality of the work that went into them

i was going to edit my post
but i thought it deserved a response
the kit looks great to me..and i will be ordering when available
i guess i was hoping there was a 3rd reviewer that maybe put a "spin" on it
i am sure these will be a good seller
has anyone else got one that can try something different ?

Due to the fact that the diameter is different at the top of the pen to the bottom it is a graceful taper to meet the ends.
However it's turned there has to be a step somewhere along the barrel in order to reduce the top diameter.
My preference is a traditional style pen, I only do fancies to show off and this is not a show off post it's a personal opinion.
There would be no problem doing a closed end pen or swapping finials but that wouldn't show the kit as is.

My issue is with this section, I can understand the reasoning for it but would prefer it to be more symmetrical to the finial.
