An order that I was commissioned to do for St Lukes Anglican School in my home town in Queensland, Australia. They have just had a new auditorium build and the floor was imported American Maple and I was given offcuts of the flooring to make 50 pens.

There was a budget for the cost per pen, so I chose a Gun Metal Devin to contrast and compliment the American Maple.

A durable high gloss finish was requested so I used CA as the choice of finish and then polished with Kustom Grit 2 step polishing paste.

There isn't anything really spectacular colour or grain wise in the Maple except that the floor alone is worth 1 million ddollars.the first 10 pen will go to the principal of the school and others that were involved in the designing of the building. The other pen is a gift to the builder of the auditorium.

They look good. I would have thought you would have Aussie woods that would have been suitable for a gym floor.

If you have any of the Maple left you could try one cut on a 45º angle to the grain and another crosscut at 90º. That should give you slightly more pattern. Otherwise it'll be good for segmenting it you are into that sort of thing.

Sadly they only came in pack lengths of 1.2 meters and 75mm wide x 19mm thick. I guess being a private school and the fees they charge, they can afford the best.

We have pre-finished maple floors in the kitchen, living, dining room. About 57mm wide x 20mm thick in random lengths from .4 meters to around 2 meters. They are not the best grade, on purpose, so have lots of random figure including Curly and Birdseye and were reasonably priced but we are closer to the source. We have 4 boxes leftover from the installation of about 1.85 square meters just in case there is an accident and we need some for repairs. That said I would kill to get some of your hardwoods since they are very scarce here.
