I've used Yorkshire grit, but only for it's abrasive properties. Problem with it, is it darkens light coloured wood. The Hampshire gloss is a newish product from the same company I believe and I haven't used it. Yorkshire grit is good, I've even used it on acrylic, but only for it's abrasive use. It isn't a good finishing product.

Regards

Craig

Used on its own, any kind of wax finish on a pen is a waste of time - the wax will wear off in use within no time at all. Used over the top of a chemical finish such as polyesters, malamine, CA etc, or over the top of an acrylic blank, it will add to the shine but will still wear off quickly. There are better alternatives for that purpose, such as microcrystaline of carnauba. YG and HS make good products, but they are not all necessarily the best finish for a pen.

Has not taken off as promised, nonetheless it has its place ,I prefer triple EEE for the fine abrasive and yes it darkens a little.

I don't think that they are worth the money spent on them because the grit is suspended in the wax which makes it hard to put other finishes over. Why can't you just sand to a finer grit before applying a finish. As Phil stated I would not put any of these products on anything that is handled a lot such as a pen. stick to something that is hard wearing.

I use the Yorkshire grit on bowls and had a notion to try it on pens and finish with Phil's method with melamine but your comment about the grit being suspended in wax Derek has given me pause for thought. The Hampshire sheen I find is not as shiny as ordinary paste wax but I might be applying it wrong or maybe it is not supposed to be so shiny (I bought the high gloss)

Invariably I will CA after EEE no probs sticks like Tar to a Tomcat. I do not go for more than two coats of CA anyway.

It’s been said that wax abrasives like Yorkshire Grit, triple EEE and others leave a residue in the pores of the wood, hence the advice by some not to use it on light coloured woods. I’d give it a miss on pens and use standard abrasives.
