Hi there. I'm Tony. I have been spending money fast - sorry, I mean woodturning! - for about 4 years now. I started as a result of encouragement from my wife, believe it or not. She and a lady friend bought an evening's pen turning nearby for their respective husbands for Christmas. We both enjoyed it, and I have subsequently set up a small workshop () in the garden, brick built, and equipped it progressively. I use an Axminster AX1218VSL Lathe which I bought secondhand. I turn various things, limited largely by my restricted artistic imagination, including both wood and acrylic pens.
I have done four Christmas/Craft fairs with some success, and that has allowed the purchase of a little more equipment. While I don't generally go for top-end stuff, I do recognise that buying cheap is often a bad move, so I'd rather wait a little longer and buy something decent.
I went on a 2 day beginners course at Axminster (in Axminster) taught by Colwin Way, which set me on a good path. Prior to that, I didn't really have much idea what I was doing, and I'm sure it wasn't particularly safe. I'm also a member of the Surrey Woodturners Association and I've learned a great deal from what I've seen there.
I'm starting to take on slightly more ambitious projects now, the next one probably being a celtic knot, and I've already seen things in this forum to help with that.
