) If you're worried about your finishing skills, cheat! Go with a resin blank and you just need to get it sanding smooth and buff it out. I happen to know for a fact that a certain person named Phil just got a bunch of blanks in with diamond dust in them. Nothing says "wedding" like a little diamond eh?
Oh and I saw the slimline you posted a picture of today, you'll be just fine tackling a Mistral or similar. Don't let the cost of the kit make you doubt your skills. I'm more likely to screw up a slim line than a bigger 2 piece kit and I've been turning for 10 years.
