Welcome to the forum Tina, tell us about yourself in the 'Introduce Yourself' department and show us some pictures of your lathe so that we can get an idea of what you mean although I'm sure the wrinklies will understand.

I think it is like the old Clarke lathe, which didn't have a morse taper, the spindle isn't hollow. I had a Swedish lathe with a solid spindle when I first started and asked around if there was a way to make pens with it, but I had no joy. I now know that if I'd had a patriot chuck with the zero jaws I could have used the mandrel shaft held in the chuck. If you already have a chuck have a look at the jaws and see how small they will close, if you have a chuck then there will be a way to turn pens.

Peter has given the best solution is to use a chuck, Do you have a drive center? You could use that and turn single tubes with no worries.
My grandson had a Clark lathe he rescued from a skip and he turned pens on it but I can't remember what mod we used to do it.
I'll sleep on it.
Oh yeah welcome to the nuthouse init?

I wish someone had told me about that chuck, it would have been a cheaper solution to me changing the lathe.

Hi Tina, Woodys suggestion looks promising you could try turning a jamb chuck to take the morse taper of the pen mandrel. Nice to see another Midlander join the clan.

And by the way

Hi Tina, all the suggestions above should sort you out for pen making, but if you do need a Morse taper for anything else you could always use a Morse taper carrier like this Axminster one in your chuck. Just make sure you get one that is designed for your make of chuck.

I have not seen these before Walter it should be ideal for what Tina wants
