Well...what finish do you want?

I have a bottle of melamine laquer and haven't used it on any turning,I just use friction polish and ren wax,I get a decent gloss finish that's hard wearing and easy to apply,I also get a better finish on harder woods like burr elm etc

I was introduced to the method by Jim a while ago when I first started turning and it's all i've used since, not just on pens either..bowls and spindle turnings

Here's one that I did a few month ago:

P1000706_zps8e5d581d.jpg

Here's how I do it:

-Turn blank to size, sand from 320 to 600 grit
-stop lathe
-wipe on sanding sealer
-leave a minute
-start lathe
-cut sealer back with 600 grit
-stop lathe
-wipe on friction polish
-leave a minute
-start lathe
-apply the friction polish impregnated tissue onto the lathe, spinning, apply moderate pressure, moving side to side until required gloss has been produced
-stop lathe
-wait a minute
-start lathe
-put a small amount of renaissance wax onto the same cloth and apply, fold the tissue and buff until dry

Heres the friction polish I use:
Friction Polish 500ml

The sealer:
Chestnut Cellulose Sanding Sealer 500ml or 1 Litre or 400ml Aerosol | eBay

And the ren wax:
Renaissance Wax Antique Polish 200ml | eBay

I have made upwards of 200 pens and all 3 tubs are a long way from empty

Similar to Matt but I use, Chestnut acrylic spray on sanding sealer then friction polish and finish with Chestnut Microcrystalline Wax :thinks:

Microcrystalline wax is the actual wax,Renaissance is just the brand,I never really experimented much with sanding sealer and only bought what was recommended to me at the time and it has worked.

Also, for acrylic blanks,I turn them, wet and dry from 320 to 600 then use a metal polish such as Autosol or Brasso.
