Hard rubber ,Peter, basically vulcanized car tyre stuff and it stinks like it too when its being turned. It used to be called vulcanite when I was a lad.

Okay, thanks for that, yes I know about vulcanised rubber, just couldn't make out the HR, I know it as ebonite.
