I can see what happened and at the moment I am oscillating between a negative rake scraper and my http://www.workshopheaven.com/tools/Ashley_Iles_Martin_Pidgen_All_Rounder.html . Essentially I have reshaped the latter  to have long sides and so it rolls  and slices quite nicely because as with cabinet making all depends on the angle of attack of the slicing edge; thus it behaves like a spindle gouge but at the important point rolls into 'like a skew'.  Moreover, when I am turning bowls it can become a bowl gouge (it has a 45 degree bevel which I can double at will).
