I want to make a real pen

Hi fellas
My precious wife gave me a beautiful fountain pen for my birthday a couple of years ago and some dirty scum crawled out of the muck and stole my beloved pen! - "NOT HAPPY, JAN!"
I have missed my pen so much that I decided I would make one. It will definitely not be a biro or a pen wth a ball in the end, a "pen" such as this is simply a common form of writing/scribble stick regardless of how it is dressed up. It will be a real pen, a fountain pen, equal or better than anything you have seen. So now I have a small problem. Can someone please tell me where I can obtain a set of engineering type drawings so I can make my pen? My intention is to build, construct, make, everything from where the nib fits at one end to the the other extreme end of the pen. The only part I will buy is the nib, everything else I will make. The material I will use will be a very exotic native Australian wood, some of which has an intensely fine and beautifull grain.
To give you an idea of what I have done with exotic native wood, the photo I have included is a picture of a shaving brush an stand that I made. The photo doesn't do the beauty of the wood any justice but it will give you an idea of the woods I have available. The base is made from Australian Sandlewood as is the handle for the brush. Sandlewood is an amazinly beautiful fine grained and hard wood. It is very difficult to aquire as it's a protected timber. The vertical section is Black Wattle, a beautiful fine timber that grows on our property. I am at present making another shaving brush and stand from the hardest timber in Australia that also rivals the hardest timber in the world. It is called Desert Rosewood and is a deep dark chocolate colour that becomes almost black when it's oiled and polished.

The photo I couldn't upload

Hi Fellas
This is the photo that I had so much trouble trying to upload. The wood for the base and brush handle is Australian Sandlewood. The vertical frame is Black Wattle. I made this for my brother for Christmas and he has placed it on display, never to be used. Check out my previous post about building myself a fountain pen. The photo doesn't do justice to the beauty of the wood. Sorry for the mess-up.

Joe

That is very nice indeed Joe and I don't think I'd use it either, a piece for display purposes only

Stirring to see individual gifts that are one off and received so well especially for family brothers can be notoriously difficult to find presents for. An acheivement in its own right Australian Sandlewood smells are impressive and Black Wattle striking grain. This knocks spots off any chromed stand I have ever seen. Truly represents this country Joe.

I can't wait to see this when it is finished. I am retired and a fountain pen would be a waste on me, about the only thing i do is sign my name on my prescriptions. .Another reason would be my writing is abysmal but i do like fountain pens. oh well

I'm left handed so a fountain pen is a bit of a bugger for me to write with. Anyway I wish you the best of luck Joe.

I like that a lot Joe, do you have another pic showing how the brush is held on the stand?

Where are you in QLD btw?

Hi,

From the OP:
"Can someone please tell me where I can obtain a set of engineering type drawings so I can make my pen? My intention is to build, construct, make, everything from where the nib fits at one end to the the other extreme end of the pen."

What your after is making a kitless pen. I don't think you'll find a set of drawings for a standard pen.

If you Google for "kitless pen" you will find lots of tutorials and advice and also that you can make them with a woodworking lathe.

You will find advice on this on this forum as well as the fountain pen network and IAP.

I've made 3 kitless pens so far, some on this site will probably have made more. I buy the nibs with holder, the clips (which I have to modify) and 2-3 blanks depending on how lucky I am in not breaking something in the process.

I have always lusted after a Parker Duofold for may years but having made a pen to the size and feel that I like I don't lust any more. Also I can chose the nib with ease.

The bit I haven't started doing yet is banding, this is new territory for me.

Hope this helps.

Inky
