I got this wood from a friend of a friend. he thought it was Brazilian rosewood. the sapwood is yellow with darker flecks, the heartwood has a red tinge to it.
I saw a similar pen on Etsy that claimed it was Ironwood.

Any ideas?

Welcome to the forum, can't help with the ID, but I am sure it won't be long before someone does.

I started turning wood 25 years ago with a 12volt drill powered tiny lathe. then I got a proper lathe for Christmas. Then I discovered beer and girls! sold the lathe took up computing. My granddad up turning, but 2 years ago, at 80, he decided to pack in. He gave me all his tools. I got divorced and now have loads of time to spend money on more tools. I love turning wood best.

Welcome to the forums BS, the above posts says it all my friend, it was just like reading a book ..

Regarding the the wood, if it wasn't for the open grain in the sap wood i would have said Cocobolo .. But i am still going with it as it is a long time that i have seen sap wood in any of my Cocobolo? Great looking pen BTW, and the photography is very clear to .. :bwink:

I agree with Jim. I've had ''2 tone'' Cocobolo identical to that.

I have turned this wood before and it is African Padauk. Very red dust when turning. The one in the picture became very dark like yours

Thanks for all the reply's. I'm going to go with Cocobolo. Apparently its part of the rosewood family, so I guess it makes sense it similar.
