Indexed Routing?

On the Lathe. Anyone done this. Did you buy or make a jig for the router etc, what router do you use?

I’ve seen this “fluting jig” but it’s a bit expensive if I don’t end up using it much.

It's something I looked into a while ago....then I bought a Beal pen wizard ( not used).
You can buy index plates that fix to most lathes and rotation stops,( some have these fitted others not). Then what I was going to do was make a box that would sit on the flat bed of the lathe out of MDF, cut a slot in the top and use my router with guide bush jigs....I wanted to do hexagonal pen blanks, but it's an itch I've not scratched yet....

I can do basic indexing on my lathe but it only has a 24 hole indexing ring. Ideally I’d like something up to about 72 divisions.

Like all of these but bear in mind they require utmost care and accuracy whilst using. All are messy,distribute quantities of fine dust with care needed for so many species..Enjoy I do.

I use an Elu 96 which you can’t buy now but a small Bosch or similar will do fine. I also made my own jig. Utube should give you some info on making your own jig & also on indexing 72 from a 24 hole indexing ring. 3x24 = 72. Good routing.

I have a jig for routing I will need to sort out some photos if you want but will be later today as I will be sorting out from the weekend most of the day.

Well this is my setup(1st Photo) it takes an old Bosch POF500A.



Where the router bit is there is a collar (Not fitted, 2nd Photo) which acts as a depth of cut system which allows for going around curves. The black knob is for the collar adjustment for depth. The board I have in the photo is a little small for doing larger projects but it is attached to the bed bars to prevent tipping. I also have a homemade dividing plate for indexing.



This shows an old router plunge base(3rd Photo) which I cannibalised to hold my router as all it takes is a collar type fitting

I can do basic indexing on my lathe but it only has a 24 hole indexing ring. Ideally I’d like something up to about 72 divisions.

Make your own all you need is a thin piece of metal with a hole in the centre to match your spindle ( needs to be a good fit and then drill 72 holes around the edge. If you can print a circle that has 72 divisions and stick that to the sheet and centre pop the location drill with a centre drill first then a drill bit the size you want the hole with care you can end up with a good index wheel.

The other route is to find a model engineer who will do it for you for a small fee/beer money
