Installing a dead center in a drill press?

I'm having some issues getting started turning pens. I wanted to start on my drill press since that's what I have available and the wording of the process seemed Layman's enough that I could get it going and get a feel of the craft. As you can probably tell through your tears of laughter already; I have found out this is absolutely not the case.

Albeit my father-in-law and I are still trudging through as we get each part to start turning as we run into a wall. The picture attached is our setup.

  • Pen kit
  • drilled, cut and tubes glued in blanks
  • dead center
  • live center base
  • lathe tools

only problem now... How the heck do I install the dead center into the drill press? The 2MT chuck is too small for the dead center and we got a ball join to remove the chuck as per instruction from another source, but now there is (for lack of the real name) the spindle that the chuck attaches to sitting there.

Do I remove that spindle? If so, how?

Basically I just need to know exactly what it is going to take to get turning pens with TBC bushings. If that's not going to happen, I do have a pen mandrel, but I would need Eagle and Jr Antony thru bushings.

Wotchya mate and welcome init?

I don't got much time to look as I am on my way to work.
But a quick gander at your pic looks like one of two things wrong here.
Either the chuck has been removed from the the morse taper leaving it in the quill.
Or the dead center is wrong size needing MT1 not MT2.
I fancy first suggestion knck the taper out then the center will slide in.
A word of warning, that can come out easily when switched on ensure it mates against something to stop that happening.

Looking at your photo it looks as if you have removed the chuck but left the Arbor in the Mt that needs to be removed to fit your dead centre wind down the quill and that should reveal a slot in which you should see the top of your Mt insert a wedge give it a whack and the Mt should fall out good luck

This is super good advice, thank you all! I noticed the taper is stuck after using the ball joint separator to pull off the chuck. I was sure that the taper could come out but my father-in-law said it was attached to the motor? I'm going to make sure that's not the case, I'm sure it can be removed.

If it is attached to the motor, it sounds like I can just get an MT1 dead center. awesome! Easy, quick fix.

Penpal - I am sorry my friend I'm not sure what you are asking me outside of where I live and I live in the US. Anything further I don't feel comfortable divulging and I know is not pertinent to getting answers.

Bassethound - Thank you brotha! Stoked to be here and to start turning. I'll keep you all posted on the adventure!

wm46 - Again, awesome to be here.

Grump - So I should just be able to "tap it out" like with a rubber mallet? I'm going to dig a little further into my exact model

Yeah looks like I'll have to get a MT1 to fit into the chuck. No biggy. $8.

Is there any concern of the dead center not being center in the chuck since it's tapered? I'm thinking not since the chuck clamps even pressure in the same place but maybe?

Hi Jon, Posted a photo and some info on your other link about this matter.
I had a quick look at an old Dynalink DP I have, in the near dark light it looks like it has a bearing in the quill. Will have a better look in daylight today.

Just rereading these posts, if you use the morse taper in the drill chuck I think you will have problems.
The Morse taper is tapered and the drill chuck is designed to hold parallel shafts, so the chuck will only be gripping the MT at three points and with a bit of pressure it may move of centre.:thinks:
