Hi All,

Can anyone help me with the name of this wood. I was given it as a freebie on an order, and I think the supplier thought I was very knowledgeable!!

It has now been oiled, Ca'd and polished, but I know someone will know what it is. I hope the photo is clear enough to show the colouration, but it is black and mid brown, quite heavy and dense.

I wish I could come on the the forum with something to add rather than take, maybe as I get more experienced.

Love reading through everything, cos you never stop learning and there is a lot of very useful and interesting information.

Not sure how to insert a photo, so attached one and tried to insert one, DOH!!

I think that I am with Woody on some form of Macassar ebony but it could also be a cocobolo was it an oily piece of wood or dry? ie ebonies tend to be dry and cocobolos tend to be oily also did it smell of musty animals?

Hi, and thanks for the quick replies.

Funnily enough I did a Macassar Ebony and a Cocobolo pen during the same period and I could't match this one to either of them. It was a bit oily and unfortunately I didn't sniff it before I turned, and as I wear a powered helmet the smell didn't get to me. I feel it is some sort of ebony, so I may go with Macassar. I do really like to tell the people who buy my pens what the wood is and I feel a bit sheepish when I am not sure. Thanks for the help.

I like the look of the upcoming new pens, the Omega I have tried looks really elegant when finished, so I really want to try some new ones.

I'd go with Asian Striped Ebony. In Macassar, the brown bands tend to be rather narrower than what we see here but there can be a degree of 'overlap'

Hi and thanks,

It seems Asian Striped Ebony is the preferred choice from the guru's, so that is what it must be. Many thanks to Woody and Lignaterrae for your insight and knowledge. Yes Woody, I am pleased with the pen, it looks and feels solid.

Well I haven't got a clue :rolling:

But if Dave (lignatrerae) thinks it is Asian Striped Ebony, that is good enough for me
If the two Neil's agree with him. I'd put money on it :whistling::wink:

I've not got a clue but am with Dave. If you have ever had the pleasure of meeting Dave you will know that what he doesn't know about timber is not worth knowing.
