I am wondering if anyone has come across this problem before

I have a Jet 12 21 vs lathe from Turners Retreat in May 2014. Today it started to go wrong with the speed changing randomly - luckily so far it has only slowed down and then sped up again. This happened three times. Much more dangerous is the last time it happened the lather went into reverse without me touching the controls.

I have stopped using it !!!!

I rang Turners Retreat and they only said that they would contact Jet - in the UK I assume and Jet would get in touch with me. This was only about 30 minutes ago so I will wait a bit longer.

As I said in the title has anyone come across this before. ?

Also who are the Jet importers / service centre in the UK. I have not been able to find anything on the web except the USA home page.

I've had this happen with an Axminster hobby vs lathe. I've got the jet 1220 non vs, but Axminster said it was likely a fault with the control box and it needed replacement. I opted to buy a better lathe.

It sounds very much like the speed potentiometer on the control box has gone on the blink. This can be a fairly common fault with pots. and a replacement will probably be a 10k ohm 1 turn pot. As Ray says your motor will be induction and won't have brushes.

As far as i am aware, Jet only give a 12 month warranty in the UK, it is up to 5 years in the US for the same gear. Jet tend to be advertised via Axminster via BriMarc. One would ask though if there is a probelem, should an item like this last more than 18 months. See trading standards for info and if have any further issues.

It's a misconception that we only have a 1 year guarantee. This is Apples take on it, but it is hidden away. I am not saying that it is easy to get things done, but if you are armed with the correct legislation when you contact the seller then you stand a better chance, but you may need to follow up with a county court case, if they play hardball.

Progress so far.

As I said in the original post I spoke to Turners Retreat at about 11.30 today and they contacted Jet (or I guess the main importers) and was told that they, Jet, would ring back. Nothing happened

I rang T. R. again at 16.50 and they said they would chase them tomorrow as it was probably too late today. I will let you know what happens.

The Jet distributor is Brimarc. They in turn are owned by Axminster, but Axminster have no involvement in this because you bought it from Turners Retreat. Both Brimarc and Turners Retreat are sound companies, with reputations to look after, and in my experience Turners Retreat give excellent service with a realistic approach, and they value their customers. I would wait and see what they say before you start getting heavy and quoting law and trading standards at them. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Like Phil says I would wait and see what TR does and says, good companies sort out the problems, it may not be instant, butI am sure they will sort it.

This happened to my lathe & as Terry said it was the pot. Once a replacement was fitted it worked a treat & still is five years later.

The law states your contract is with the company you brought it from they should sort it out with Jet not you, demand they replace or repair it at no cost to you. If it has to go back ask for a loaner till its repaired.

Update

Turners Retreat have been great so far but I cannot say the same about Axminster where the lathe has to go for repair. T.R. spoke to Axminster last week then rang me back and said the Axminster would be in tough soon. Nothing was heard.

Next day was the same story after a couple of calls to T. R. Then someone from Axminster did ring late in the day and said the lather would be collected on Monday by a courier. Of course not time was given but the van turned up about 11.00 so not that bad. The driver took one look at the lather and said Its not in a box and it looks heave I cannot take it and turned around and left. What did he expect ? who keeps a box for 18 months. If they had told me of this requirement I could have done something about it.

I rang TR again and after a short while they got back to me and said they would pick the lathe up themselves. The manager (I think it is Dave I really should remember) came early this evening and collected it as arranged. He apparently lives about 40 minutes by car away from me. A big THANKYOU to dave

Now I have to wait to hear from Axminster. I hope it is not too long
