Just drove across to Yorkshire and called in John Boddy's for some offcuts of oak. They've got a 40-50% reduction on all wood to clear everything out ready for re-stocking. Spent £127 before management dragged me out. Pity I wasn't on my own with an empty car, I'd have really gone to town. Picked up a plank of purpleheart big enough for about 70 pens for £9 amongst other things.

They certainly aren't cheap normally Terry - Snainton is much better - but at these prices I had to dive in.

I was at the same place a few weeks ago Keith, they didn't have much stock in the shop regarding pen turning .. But you did a fine job spending that amount while the Wife was with you ... I would have been hearing ^&%&"*%$ at about £25 ... :whistling:

Have you managed to make a trip to see Kirk at Chapel en le Frith? If you want some quality exotic timber hes the main man for the north, Bob Smith at Timberline in the south. Kirk has virtually a monopoly on the importation of cocobolo, most of it comes through him. The other quality guy to touch base with up north is Martin Pigden. He's on the RPT and runs a wood business out of a tatty old van but his prices are excellent and he has some quality stuff, Hes based in the Hull area, forget where, cant find his card.

Kirk is boss at exotichardwoodsukltd.com contact details are there. For the southerners Timberline is well worth a visit, Bob Smith who runs the place used to be an acoustic instrument maker who got sick of the poor quality of wood available so imported it himself. His warehouse, although not huge, is a wood workers dream, boards of zebrano, bubinga, birds eye maple, hoduras rosewood, you name it he might have it. He's based at Tonbridge and can be found at Exotic Hard Woods | Timberline | Specialist Woods, Veneers, Marquetry. If you do visit him, his sidekick is a guy called Hamish who is a bit of a legend in the Bog Oak world, and a wealth of knowledge on wood, and providing Bob is not too grumpy twenty minutes of Hamish's time is a real eye opener. Hamish has been involved wit the Fenland Bog Oak project, have a look at this!. I did ask him if there was a spare plank going begging. They have taken 3.2 gallons per cubic foot out of the wood so far! This is the facebook page, there seems to be a problem with the main web page at the moment: https://www.facebook.com/fenlandblackoak
