Jr Gent Epic Fail

A gorgeous looking olive wood blank on a Jr Gent has turned into a real epic fail :nonono::nonono::nonono:

Firstly the turning & sanding was fine, I decided on a CA finish, that application went fine, sanded with micro mesh & buffed, I was really please with the finish

But its all downhill from here, a couple of nights ago I watched a video & someone was explaining how they dealt with ca glue sticking the blanks to the bushes, seemed like a simple and easy solution, they showed in the video, use a parting tool to put a line / cut into the ca close to / at the bush / tube joint.

I did the first tube no problem, did one bushing on the second tube, no problem, went to do the last bush, the parting tool skewed to the right and about an inch deep into the CA of my beautifully turned and finished olive wood blank.

:devil::devil::devil:

Decided all was not lost, turned / sanded of the CA from that tube & reapplied the CA all looked well but........

On the photos you can see an area of the cap barrel near the centre as blown, whilst I was photographing it you could see it getting worse, then after I had taken the second photo I heard a crack and I actually saw the clip move, hence the third photo.

So most of the problem was my making but the Jr Gent kit may well have failed anyway, one for dismantling & starting again.

Ahhh I see the problem, It didn't actually move to the position in the photo, I moved it there to show a failure of the kit, when It cracked & moved it was only about 1mm sideways :whistling::whistling::whistling::whistling::whistling:

Such a shame but practice makes perfect. Instead of using a parting tool on its side, use the parting tool normally to remove the ca from the bushes.

Don't use bushes, well at least not the metal ones make yourself some delrin bushes and loosen them every 3 or 4 coats of CA.

Billy,

I have seen a lot of remedies to situations that in the main, have failed to materialise. Sticking the bushes to the blanks is caused by glue, obvious, but the amount of glue that you apply is crucial to the methods that I use. The only exception to this is where I have a blank of a real oily wood such as cocobole or bocote.

CA is crap at sticking to metal and good, relatively, to wood, providing that you dont dilute the glue with blo. I put on about four coats, neat, the first a thin coat that is worked into the bare wood. Have seen some who put a ss on prior to CA! Why? any way four coats later, polished and burnished, the bushes are stuck to the blanks, but gripping the bush with a pair of pliers and gently moving the pen side to side, the glue always gives over the bushes not the wood onto which it has a firmer hold, On only two occasions in about 500 have I had the glue crack over the wood and on both occasions it was cocobolo. If you put unneccesary volumes of glue on then it gets more difficult as well as wasting money on excessive glue. I hold the blank and give it a quick rotation on a piece of scratch to clean off the end.

Why does no-one listen to me?

If you take the barrels off the bushings and apply the CA between centres there will be no bushings for the CA to stick to.

All these ridiculous schemes for getting it off the bushings or preventing it from sticking to them are entirely unnecessary if you take the primary precaution of not having any bushings for it to stick to in the first place. It's not rocket science. :rolling:

Do them between centres then there are no bushes for the ca to get stuck to simple solution

I go with the between centers argument all day long, I also ca the end grain to seal it.
It does sometimes leach through the grain a short way which gets picked by the camera but not to the eye.
I believe it helps to create a bond and stops the ca lifting from the barrel.

That's a shame Billy.

Looks really nice otherwidpse..

Use cones, that's what I use when applying the Crap Alot..

Actually that's what I should have said instead of bushes, I use delrin cones, not bushes:thumbs:

That is tough Billy, the pen did look a good one for sure.. I had this happen to me on a couple of occasions in the past ..

You can either do as Walter shouted or place wood wax on the barrel ends, both work very well .. :bwink:
