I wanted to introduce myself with a photo of a pen I made not long ago. I live in Australia, and started turning pens about 4 or 5 months ago. Just do it occasionally on weekends. I was introduced to the forum by Penpal. Here is the Jr Gent made of Karelian birch.

Thank you for your comments! Interesting, to know another name for timber, thanks for telling me! I will probably do a bit of research for where the name comes from. Karelia - is the region in north of Russia, where this particular blank came from:)

Ilya,

Masur Birch was thought to have the patterning as a result of infection caused by a boring beetle but this has recently been disputed and it is believed now to be a separate sub species of the Birch tree. Masur or Karelia Birch is native to the north Norway/Scandanavia /Finland area and does extend into the area of Russia called Karelia as you point out. Very expensive to get hold of here in the UK and the quality of the wood available has declined dramatically over the last five years.

Welcome Ilya that is one beautiful pen made with a beautiful bit of wood the first time I ever turned Masure birch was with two small logs I got from Axminster power tools when we were on honeymoon 12 years ago with which I made two small vases and they look like they have flames leaping up the sides of them but sadly now I have to agree with Neil the quality of it in this country is now very poor and they want a premium price for it so it is a great joy to see a quality piece so thank you for sharing your pen with us
