Ilya,

Masur Birch was thought to have the patterning as a result of infection caused by a boring beetle but this has recently been disputed and it is believed now to be a separate sub species of the Birch tree. Masur or Karelia Birch is native to the north Norway/Scandanavia /Finland area and does extend into the area of Russia called Karelia as you point out. Very expensive to get hold of here in the UK and the quality of the wood available has declined dramatically over the last five years.
