As you are aware Elm is used to make coffins, So these pair I made as an appreciation gift for my local undertaker who helped me when my mother passed away 6 months ago.
Sorry if there are any noticeable fingerprints on the pens

What a super way of saying thank you Johnny. A lovely pair of pens and a great finish although I like the fountain pen better because it looks to be too much unbroken gold on the rollerball, but that's the kit and not your turning. Cracker!

A pair of very nice pens, Johnny! Elm has been a long-time favourite of mine - its grain really comes through on a pen.

Nice pens John, and as you say elm was used to make coffins, keels for boats, bridge supports amongst others due to its durability. The thought was that the coffin would be preserved for longer to help the preservation of the body and the transition to the underworld. In all reality the real reason behind the folklore is that they needed to use elm for something else as you can't use it for heat on an open fire or cook over it as the stench from burning elm is very noticeable and pretty awful.
