ah, ok, it thought all those little squiggles where cracks originally like in burr.
That is the natural wood gain pattern for Masur birch

Yep it's a great wood to work with ...but it demands respect, so easy as you go is the watch word.

Ed when you first said you would be making a Masur Birch pen I looked forward to seeing it and yes it is true to form a lovely timber indeed found some more the other day in my stash.
