Odd one out I maybe but when I hand a pen to any one for whatever reason I always extend the nib and so my grain matching follows this reasoning. This habit became necessary when casually handing a closed pen has resulted in heavy handed and wrecking treatment by the potential user some disastrous. It is that first impression that lasts for most of us the immediate reaction to receiving is to turn the pen in the hand to catch the light and more fully appreciate the pen offered. So for me ready to use.
I can see with two piece pens posting the top is a mixed feast in that it depends with multi threading how it posts to the grain alignment. My carry pen always gets a gasp and is set for the best impression opened. On the other hand I am not making pens to sell sell sell there is no sales pressure applied by me.
