I have just joined the group and feel a bit out of my depth. I started pen turning when we were just coming out of lockdown during Covid. I had never done any woodwork or turning so it has taken me a bit of time get the feel of using a lathe and chisels etc. i have however, managed to produce some pens, all gifts for my family and friends who probably don’t want to openly criticise them. But I feel happy that I made something that actually works.

Hello James - welcome to the Forum.
There is no need whatsoever to feel out of your depth. Absolutely everyone here started from the position of a novice, so please don't feel out of place, and do feel free to ask as many questions as you like. Members here are only too happy to help, and before not too long, you'll be able to do some of the helping, not the asking.

as long as you’re enjoying it then you are doing it right. Just remember there is no such thing as a daft question, if you don’t know the answer to it, then ask.

Folks on here are helpful and friendly . I recommend seeing if there are any local clubs near you as watching demonstrators and also chatting with other turners is helpful too

Hi James, welcome to the forum.
Has already been said many times above, don't feel out of your depth we all started out turning a "Frankenstein's Monster" of a pen, I still have mine in a frame in my workshop (horrible - badly turned - very badly finished and horrible to write with) but its a reminder on how bad my turning really is and they are still the same :rolling:

Enjoy it, that's the main thing
