I don't pretend to be an expert on identifying woods, Peter, but the instructions provided by Kallenshaan state that the barrel is made from koa. It is not a wood that I have used before and it had a 'fluffy' surface (for the want of a better word) before being turned to size, which I have not encountered with maple on the occasions when I have used it.
