i have a piece of pitch pine with a large knot in it
it is big enough to make a pen
will it be too brittle or has anyone tried before?

Hi Steve all you need is very sharp tools blunt tools will cause you to apply to much pressure and just smash it also drill it on slow and keep clearing the flutes of the drill or they will clog and overheat the knot and it will break good luck

Yep dunnit loads of times, in fact I got a large knot from a pallet today.
When I have denailed it I will make a pen from it.

Just looked for some pics of some I done but I on a different confuser init?

looks like i have nothing to lose
it is pitch pine..seasoned for just over 140 yrs so hope the knot has settled :-)

I will give it a go when get a minute
not done any turning for a week as workshop is turned upside down
may get a sierra or 2 from it

That's nice just watch out for the parting line I would cut either side of it if I were you.
Here's the one I pulled of the pallet, I will have a go at it over the weekend and show the result in another thread.

On a piece with a knot like this I make a donut of bluetac around the knot & squeeze a shot of thin C a in the donut & let it soak in to harden the knot & stop it from going slack.

What lathe you got their Grump is a Maxi ?

A green thing that spins around at variable speed. I dunno Woody will tell you, he understands things like names I call it Ethal (anagram of lathe init?).

It's not a Maxi, that one is only a tiddler, I think it's a 305vr

it cant go slack as it will be a complete knot
but worth putting in the knowledge base

I tried to glue it back together but it shows unfortunately
may have made a nice pen
