Kodak Grey Cards

I have a set of the 18% grey card with instructions for using them for white balance and for exposure. There are 2 at 10x8 and 1 at 5x4, but I thought that if anyone would like one for their pen photography I could cut down the 10x8 to make 8 5x4 cards making 9 5x4 cards total if there are nine people who would like one. I don't want anything in return except for someone to either photocopy or scan the instruction for others to use. Any takers or do they get forgotten about for another 20 years.

That particular shade is known as neutral grey because in black and white it gives just that it sees it as white.

They are handy for setting the colour balance when dealing with artificial light by adjusting the colour values in the camera or by leaving the card in the photo so you can correct in photoshop especially if you are a raw shooter

Okay, another one bites the dust, I make that 4 so far.

I have my camera set up using a grey card and it is certainly worth it !!!

I have to admit I don't use one for my pen photos and it is a long time since I used one. I used to use them mostly for lighting ratios and they are brilliant if you print colour and use a colour analyser with the enlarger, with the advent of digital I shut down my darkrooms. The white side of the card reflects 90% and can be used to set white balance. They can be a great little tool.

You might think this is a waste of time if you don't have your own Grey card and you would be correct, but you can make your own grey card if you really want.

I am sure there are more tutorials to make a grey card and even if you don't have photoshop I am sure your printer software would help in getting a neutral grey, maybe not as accurately as photoshop, but if it helps to get your exposure or white balance better, then it's a bonus. I would still prefer a Kodak Grey Card over a home made one, but they can be expensive.

If you try out the grey card, let us know if you think your images are better or not. Not everyone will get on with the grey card, I honestly don't think Jim or Vic will notice any significant difference in the quality of their images, they are already very good quality.
