Label join

I want to make a pen with a tartan barrel. It's for my granddaughter's boyfriend in Oz, a present from Scotland, ye ken! As I am not set up for casting, I thought I would use a decal that would cover the barrel on a Sierra, then cover in CA. I am not sure how to deal with the join, as overlapping might show up as a stripe of stronger colour and trying to do a butt join accurately would be difficult.

Can anyone offer me any advice on this?

I would roll it round the tube dry no glue over lapping then cut with
A razor blade through both layers this should leave a neat joint for sticking also position the join under the clip .

When I was a decorator we used to tear the edge of the paper to make the join invisible give it a try tear the bit to be removed downwards so that the top overlap edge is thin and random

Like Woody, although giant photos not wallpaper, we used to rip the edges so that the line was broken. If you can rip the decal then it's fine, if not stagger the cut so that it zigs and zags etc.

Or measure the tube and calculate the size of label using pi x d and print to that size init?

That's okay if the design joins up from the left hand side and the right.

Surely that's true of all the methods mentioned init?
The idea of measuring so you can make the pattern fit init?

If the image is the right design and matches up at the join it is much easier to see where the join is but if the image continues past the line of overlap then the paper can be torn with a soft and staggered edge which is not in a line and is almost impossible to discern.

I know, but I read the question and a tartan pattern is a regular pattern that could be measured and made to fit.
Therefore giving another alternative to those already mentioned init?

He got out before you's vote Yes??:face::face::face::funny::funny::funny:

Very funny! No, my daughter emigrated with her family and my granddaughter now has an Aussie boyfriend. My wife and I are going out there next year and I am making personalised pens for them all. BTW, when I said decal, I meant transfer. I was going to put a tartan transfer over a white blank.

I have been looking at Sierra's as a kit for wrapping a label and find the circumference to be 32.84 mm, the length of the label to be 56 mm.(1.293" x 2.204").
What was the tartan you had in mind ?
Avery do an app that will print labels whatever size you want.
Hope this helps, PM me if you want more info.

Get yourself a picture of the desired tartan, crop it be equilateral then tell the printer to print at the exact size you want.
No apps or fancy software needed init?

Thanks for the offer, but printing a label is not the problem, it was how to deal with the join.
