Hi All,

I have only just noticed that I have the Help 4 Heroes colours in the wrong order.
Oh well the next one will be correct.

The wood was marked up as Fruit Mallee. Great wood to turn.
The Leveche is another super quality kit from Beaufort Ink.

It has a four blade cutter, my 2 blade made a much better cut.
The supplier kindly sent me a second kit as we thought it was just a rogue cutter but unfortunately it is the same.

Are you keeping it nice and sharp? And if so, how are you sharpening it?

I tried sharpening it with a 300 & 600 Diamond card. It improved but not for long. I have never sharpened my 2 blade trimmer and that still barrel trims a 7mm perfectly.
It is not a problem, I will give the sanding type jig a try.

Albany in Western Australia is home to Eucalyptus preissiana Bell Fruited Mallee ,it has a bell shaped nut fruit after flowering. Confirmation should come from suppliers but certain is this pen of yours is BURLED timber at its best. With well over 700 types of Mallee there are few who can identify each one without having leaves,flowers and the bell shaped nuts. I worked for a few years with Scientists who wrote and updated the significant volumes on Australian Trees. Many years ago I collected the identifyiers from Brown Mallee a timber I adore in Burl Form and found it had no true botanical name and was being sold under various incorrect names. Back to calling it brown Mallee.

Had this nagging memory of Rib Fruited Mallee or Eucalyptus corrugata as it is formally called,very similar to your pen blank ,grows also in Western Australia, a look alike for your Burled Blank.

It certainly is a beautiful piece of wood and I am happy to have two more pen blanks left over.

I would say it is the most dense wood I have turned to date. Although it was rock hard it was a dream to cut.
