I figured it was just big enough to make a mallet similar to an American one a good friend has that I've coveted for a while.

The head had no finish applied it just shone off the tool with lovely grain

I've put some photos of making it on my Facebook page in my signature if anyone is interested

Lovely mallet Doug, I especially like the separator ring, is it copper?

Woody could have given you both halves though :whistling:

It is a copper ring, some kind of hydraulic olive I swiped from my mates box of hydraulic fittings.

I'm sure woody has turned the other half into pens by now, I'm certainly saving the off cuts for Sierras or the like.

One of my favourite woods Doug. I've made several mallets and I have a few bowling balls. If you're lucky you can get some nice colours - like yours

Great looking mallet Doug how big is the the finish mallet. I made one using a complete ball.

Us southerners have a complete ball to play with and don't have to share 1/2 each:funny::funny::funny:

The head of the mallet is 3" long & 2" across Derek the total length with the handle is 9 1/2".
I do have bigger mallets but the design is based on Blue Spruce's mallets

As I mentioned a friend has one & it really does feel great in the hand, his has a stainless steel rod that joins the handle to the head where as mine is an old bolt but with this & the Lignum it really does give a surprisingly weighty mallet.
