I've had a bowling ball for a while now wondering how to cut it up so when George showed how to do it with a simple jig with the ball glued to it I had to have a go. The jig took 5 mins to make and was perfect for the ball cut as smooth as a babies bum with no jumping at all. Thank you George. I cut it all into pen blanks and made this Zeta from a smaller piece.

The only bowling ball I have had been mounted as a trophy the wood screw fixing broke off when trying to remove it and the grain is horrendous when it turns up again I will make a captive clamp to hold it and cut it up as a challenge mate turning them originally must have become quite an art if correct weight and bias considerations are to be accounted for. Watching World Championships it seemed forever for years on end some of those bowlers threw a fierce ball to clear the field so I guess they had to be tough. Just musing Paul thanks for the accidental nudge mate.

From bowl to pen, what a great selling point Paul .. You don't see many pens made from this wood, i have a large block myself but never bothered with it? You just may have stirred something up my friend .. Love It!!

So, Paul and/or George - care to share this jig for cutting bowling balls please? I have one and at some point I will have to overcome my fear of it and attempt a dissection, any help would be much appreciated.

Oh - nice pen by the way, Paul!:whistling:

its just a softwood L shape sled and a good quality hot melt glue used in 3 places on the ball followed by a sharp bandsaw blade!!

On the subject of sharp bandsaw blades, I realised yesterday that I had mounted mine with the teeth facing UP, not down. I had to 'turn the blade inside out' to get it to cut anything harder than cardboard ...
