If it has just been cut down seal both ends and wait until I can collect it:face::face::face:

How wet is it you may find turning it green may be a good idea cut either side and then through the centre leaving the burr on one half roughly round the blank around the burr mount it on the lathe and form a tenon on the cut face so that the rough top is a natural edge.

Not that I turn many burrs:whistling:

I presume it is a burr and not just scare material from a limb that was removed while it was growing

Hello Derek

Felt sorry for Mike Waldt and his goblet. I was screaming at the screen saying thick stem....

Not sure how long the tree has been down but the moisture content is still rather high. 25% in places but as low as 17% in others.
There is evidence of a small branch being cut off in the centre but its very small so this could be a burl.

I think I will do as you so kindly suggested. I will chop off the ends and then cut the wood behind the burl lengthways. I will do this today and put a face plate on it and make a large tenon. I will then rough turn a natural edge bowl. INteresting to see how this turns out...

Thanks again for the support and advice,

Cheers

When I read this first part of the sentence I thought you were going to keep it for me:funny::funny::funny:

Try to mount the faceplate on the bark side so that any burr will end up around the top of the bowl and leaving a natural edge very similar to the one I have just completed.

If need be clean out an area for it to sit without encroaching on what will be the edge of the bowl.

Try making a normal bowl but practice keeping your hands behind the edge of the rest as if you go beyond that with a burr you will soon know about it. No I have not done that yet

Starting to look interesting Frederick, look forward to seeing the end result. If you are going to now wait for it to dry seal the outside and put it into a bag with some of the wet shavings turn it out every week or two and turn the bag inside out, place it back in with some fresh shavings.

At least the video is up the right way.:funny::funny::funny: Sorry could not resist

Hello Derek

Just to let you know that I have now sealed the blank with parafin wax, placed it in a bag of shavings. I will look at it every couple of weeks to change the shavings and bag.

Lovely Olive wood bowl that MSS made last night. That would have taken me days to do....and he didn't colour it

Cheers
