Living up in the Highlands I do not get to many events where there are woodwork and demonstrations so it was nice to get out to Logie Steading near Forres on Saturday. It was a very interesting event I did not realize there is a sawmill there with lots of lovely wood for sale and managed to get some Zebrano. There were woodturned items there particularly Gary Lowe The Tartan Turner who had a great display also there was boat building and someone showing how to build old Scottish wood frame buildings using hand tools the chain saw carving was very good and I must admit to being a bit envious of a wood workers bench which he had made complete with Moxham vice. There was a blacksmith there that said he could make me some holdfasts.

Sounds like a great day plus you have found a new timber supplier although I am not sure if thats good or bad lol.
I keep saying I am not going to buy anymore wood until I have used a good bit of what I already have, just a shame I can't stick to what I say.

Thanks for that Bob mate. Myself and the wife holiday in that area very frequently, we always stay in Relugas, and have visited Logie Steading loads of times. Never seen a sawmill and wood for sale though. We’ll be back there in a few weeks time so I’ll drop in and have a look.
One good place I did find was Ullapool woodturning which had a pile of offcuts for you to rummage about in and I got some good pieces there at a good price. I believe they’ve moved to the Black Isle now.

Thank you everyone it is not often I get to these things would love to get to Yandle's or Harrogate one of these days but it would need 3 or 4 car sharing to make it financially viable from here. Alan the guy doing the chainsaw sculpting is very talented think I saw him a few years back at the Scottish open chainsaw carving at Carrbridge which is in September if you are ever in this area. You are right to suspect it was cold Peter it was about 5 deg C but had what we call up here a lazy wind which means it goes through you instead of round you by the time me and Mrs. Bob got back to the car we could not feel our noses, Would be nice to be down the garden of England Mark in September where about is the woodfest in Kent? Martin it is hard to keep the moths in your wallet at these events infact impossible. Keith if you are coming from Forres instead of turning right off the main road to go to Logie just go past the turning it is 100 yards on your left I will PM you the folks mobile later today incase you want a visit. You are right the Ullapool woodturng is in the Black Isle he only opens at the weekends though.

Looks like a great event and as Mark stated (Flexi) we have one down here and a good event as well. I quite often get the chance to chat to Mark when down there.

Looks a great event Bob. I would probably have gone there under other circumstances, but I'm glad to say I don't miss any of that good ol' bracing Highland spring weather.

I met Gary just before I moved - he popped down and bought a boot full of wood from me. I wonder if any of those pieces are lumps he's given life to from the dark and dusty depths of my old workshop.

Hi Phil,

hope some of it is your timber he certainly has made a good job of the wood and I like the colours on the bowls very much like some of the tartans I suppose it is the nearest thing to tartan paint:love_it:
