Man dead following community riot

A MAN has died after he intervened to stop fighting at Canteen Creek on Tuesday afternoon.

Up to 100 people were believed to be involved in the riot at the remote community south east of Tennant Creek.

The clash was the culmination of fighting and unrest between family groups over the past few weeks and brawlers were armed with sticks, poles and star pickets. Police from Tennant Creek and Ali Curung were sent to Canteen Creek to settle the matter while detectives also travelled to the community to investigate the death of the 52-year-old.

Tennant Creek and Barkly Police Divisional Officer A/ Superintendent Pauline Vicary said police would remain in the community until order was restored.

“Where offences are identified and offenders are nominated, these matters will be investigated and offenders will be charged and brought before the court,” she said. “This type of violent behaviour is not acceptable. “It causes significant consequences and trauma for everyone in the community which is further exacerbated when it results in the death of a community member.” A/Superintendent Vicary said once order was restored, police would work with the community and other stakeholders to identify issues that caused the fighting and work towards a long term resolution to prevent further incidents.

The violence at Canteen Creek follows fighting in Ali Curung last week that resulted in six arrests. Police and Tactical Response Group officers were sent to the community to quell rioting. Locals also reported seeing TRG officers patrolling the streets of Tennant Creek last Friday night.
