Bas***d Acrylic drives you nuts but the outcome makes it worth while. I really enjoy turning wet/damp wood just to see the streamers peeling off. Sad old sod ain't I

I use a natural bristle paint brush to clear the horrible stuff when I turn plastic.
Yes I do turn plastic I just don't shout about it or show it to you init?
Must have been cold to warrant wearing a glove, not a practice I would do or preach but each to their own, do you count the fingers when you remove it?

Thanks for the safety concerns, guys, I appreciate it. I started wearing a glove on my left hand when I got my first carbide chisel. One of the first times I used it, I cut my thumb on the side of the cutter. Those things are sharp! I discovered that I like the glove because it allows my left hand to slide along the back of the tool rest more smoothly. The glove fits tight, I don't think there's much chance it would catch on anything. (I know, famous last words!) As for the jacket, well it's cold in the shop this time of year. I've been wearing a jacket when it's cold since I've been turning. I know it's potentially dangerous, and I suppose I shouldn't do it, but I don't always make the best decisions when it comes to personal safety. I only posted the video because I really like the ribbons shooting off the blank.

Few things worth note.

a) The gloves is a good idea when you have allergies, sensitivity to the material being turned
b) Same with the long sleeves. In fact you can get turning smocks with long sleeves and elastic cuff's

I see no safety issues in the video but I do see good habits being used.

Something worth note: This country has picked up a habit of suing people. (Dunno where it originated but I can guess).
As always gone over the top with it, anyone recommending anything against the Health and safety act is deemed liable.
Any other act or regulation come that.

Well used slogan these days "Where there is blame, there is a claim".
He does it so it must be OK, I saw it on teaching video, and so on.

What is the Health and safety act? I know it does not pertain to me as I am in a different nation. As is the original poster of the video.

I can however, show you where medical safety is at risk by *NOT* using covering.

It is actually the Health and Safety at work act 1974 with many revisions and additions.

One can do whatever one wants in their own premises but the moment they show themselves doing something without warnings they become liable for prosecution.
We cannot be seen to condone the use of gloves or lose clothing near machinery, long hair should be tied back and tucked in or under hat.

There are times when gloves should be worn and times when not.
Something as simple as using cloth to apply CA, you can use it yourself but must teach the use of paper not cloth.

Whether at work or not the act applies, if the student is making pens in his / her shed and making them for sale then their shed becomes deemed as a place of work.
Over the top legislation and sue anyone lawyers mean we can't fart in a strong wind without looking all round to see whom we may hurt or offend.

I visited a customer who had a broken leg and asked if I could put his rubbish bin out for the refuse collector, sorry but no I can't until the path and bin have been risk assessed and signed off as safe, how stupid is that?

As for allergies, if appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment) cannot be provided then the operative is to stay away from allergen.
