I have been intrigued by the thought of using marbeling ink. When I look at all the instruction on using the ink all instructions state that you use paper to lift the ink off the water. Do you them transfer the ink from the paper onto the wood or can you lift the ink off directly by using a bowl blank? I was oping it could be lifted onto a bowl blank which has been prepaired and sanded to a finish, let it dry and then hollow out the bowl. Hope this all makes sense.

Interesting idea John.
Your big problem will be the transfer of enough ink on to the bowl - the paper will soak up the ink into it's fibres - you will need to find a way of holding the ink on top of the paper yet at the same time keeping the pattern. I had some lovely results on paper years ago, but only on paper.
Do let us know how you go on

My understanding is that the paper on to which you lift the ink becomes the finished article. Therefore I would think you need to lift it directly on to the wood. But water is going to raise the grain and spoil the finish which ever way you do it. Sanding to restore the finish will remove most if not all of the ink. But assuming you already own the ink, you've got nothing to lose except time, so why not give it a go and see how you get on.

This is something we used to do as kids whith tobaco tins and the likes I did some necklases a few years ago by floating and mixing different coloured paint on water and dipping them into it wood and corian the water dont touch the wood only the paint but it will only work on small stuff unless you have a very big bowl

There was a programme on t'other night about restoring 'The music Room' somewhere & in it they were marbling panelling.
They spread a coating on the wall, then used brushes to create the marbling effect, maybe something similar could be done on the bowl blank ??
