Magnetic top kits

I have just made this pen from a lovely piece of stabilized spalted tiger oak. The hastily taken photos don't do justice to the wood - and neither does the kit! I bought a couple of these Graduate pen kits because the magnetic top makes it easy to match the grain, but I am not impressed by the quality, especially of the plating. Does anybody know whether there are any higher quality kits available that have magnetic tops...or are magnetic tops just not popular?

Love the pen Bob grateful for the second pic mate dial Dr Google for other magnetic topped pens they have a mixed revue from time to time I notice on the IAP with many fans but equally so many detractors they seem risky for me.Great for a desk pen

That is a gorgeous piece of wood, but I see what you mean about the finish. It just doesn't look right. I've turned several of the magnetic pens from PSI, and have been happy with the finishes on all of them. Vertex Supreme, Magnetic Vertex, and Magnetic Graduate. Yours is, I believe, the Magnetic Graduate. But I haven't seen the finish look like that on any of mine.

Thanks for posting the photos, Jim. The Graduate looks to have better quality plating than mine. Perhaps the ones available in the UK have poorer quality plating. I particularly like the Vertex Supreme, which seems to be a nice design with good quality plating. I have tried Googling it and can't find anybody supplying the Vertex Supreme in the UK (you have a much wider range to choose from in the USA.)

Perhaps Dan could be persuaded to source some Vertex Supremes and offer them for sale.

One thing I noticed, is yours is the gold finish, and none of mine are. Maybe it's a problem with just that finish. Most of mine are gun metal, with the Vertex Supremes being chrome with gold accents. I've also turned several of the Vertex click pens, but none in gold. Just chrome and gun metal. As for purchasing the kits in the UK, I'm sure some of the suppliers here would ship to you, but I imagine that would be very expensive.
